Vitamin D deficiency symptoms: how do you recognize it (especially after the age of 50)?

Important: Many complaints of a vitamin D deficiency are non-specific. Are you in doubt, or do you have persistent complaints? Discuss blood tests (25-OH-vitamin D) with your GP.

What is vitamin D and why is it so important?

Vitamin D is a hormone precursor. Your body produces it under the influence of sunlight (UVB), and also gets it from food — especially oily fish, egg yolks and fortified products. According to the Gezondheidsraad vitamin D plays a role in:

In the Netherlands, shortages are widespread during the winter months. The RIVM reported that at the end of winter, 7 to 26% of Dutch people had a vitamin D deficiency. That's why so many people look for symptoms — especially between October and March. The Nutrition Center confirms that many people over 50 need supplementation to meet their needs.

Vitamin D deficiency symptoms: what do you notice in daily life?

A long list of complaints is often mentioned online. The most medically relevant are:

1. Muscle weakness

Difficulty climbing stairs, getting up from a chair or walking for long periods of time. This is a classic signal of a clear deficiency — stronger than just 'being tired'. See also our article about fatigue during menopause if your complaints overlap with hormonal changes.

2. Bone and muscle pain

Diffuse aching pain, stiffness or a feeling of heaviness — especially in the back, pelvis or legs. With long-term severe deficiency, osteomalacia (bone softening) may occur.

3. More susceptibility to infections

Colds and flu that last longer or come back more often. Vitamin D supports the immune system; if there is a deficiency, that function may be less optimal.

4. Fatigue and concentration problems

This is mentioned a lot, but in itself it is a weak signal. In combination with muscle weakness or bone pain, vitamin D is a logical check — just like magnesium and B vitamins contained in Xodil for energy and recovery.

5. Mood complaints (especially in winter)

Winter depression (SAD) is associated with low vitamin D status. It is not a proven one-on-one relationship, but it is a reason to have your worth measured when you collapse in the dark months every year.

Vitamin D deficiency symptoms in women after 50

The Health Council advises all women aged 50 and over to take 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D daily — even without obvious complaints. Reasons:

  • The skin produces vitamin D less efficiently from zunlight
  • The intake from food may decrease
  • Bone density and muscle strength become more vulnerable
  • Many women in menopause experience fatigue and muscle pain — read: fatigue in menopause: causes and what really helps

That is why many women search for vitamin d deficiency symptoms women. The advice remains: have it measured and supplement specifically if your value is too low.

Risk groups in the Netherlands (check if you belong to them)

  • People who rarely go outside
  • People with a dark skin color
  • Elderly people (70+ receive 20 µg advice — see Nutrition Center)
  • Pregnant women and children (own advice - see Health Council)
  • Overweight people (vitamin D is stored in fat tissue)
  • People wearing sunscreen or covering clothing

How do you diagnose a vitamin D deficiency?

The reliable test is 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) in the blood. Interpretation (global, according to NHG guidelines):

  • < 30 nmol/L: severe deficiency - medical follow-up
  • 30–50 nmol/L: deficiency or insufficient — supplementation often necessary
  • 50–75 nmol/L: sufficient for many people
  • > 75 nmol/L: generally good

More explanation: Thuisarts.nl — vitamin D. Self-diagnosis via symptoms alone is unreliable.

What can you do if you have a vitamin D deficiency?

1. Sunlight (March–October)

15–30 minutes of daylight on arms and face, preferably between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Do not burn.

2. Nutrition

Oily fish twice a week, eggs, enriched dairy. Food alone is not enough for most people in the Dutch winter.

3. Supplements

Dosage depends on your blood value and age. The Health Council recommends 10 µg/day for women aged 50+; If there is a measured deficiency, your doctor may prescribe a higher dose.

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the usual form. Combine with vitamin K2 (MK-7) if you're taking high doses — both are in Xodil's formula. Always discuss high doses with a professional.

4. Systemic support in addition to vitamin D

Vitamin D is one piece of the puzzle. After the age of 50, B12 absorption, magnesium, sleep and hormonal changes also play a role. A single D3 pill won't solve everything — but it is one of the best-founded basic steps.

Do you not want to take vitamin D separately, but rather as part of a broader vitality system? Xodil Daily Packs combine D3 with 80+ ingredients — designed for energy, recovery and cellular health, without caffeine. More context:
